Dreamfields and PGWC host Girls’ Soccer Tournament

Provincial Government Western Cape in partnership with Dreamfields hosted a provincial-wide programme that involved girls' football and positive social messaging. The programme kicked off in Cape Town and started a journey through the province before culminating in the final event on 28 May 2011. The intention was to use football as a platform to counter teenage pregnancy. The Football Foundation hosted the Overberg event in Gansbaai on the 14th of May together with DreamEvent coordinators Lifezone Soccer.

Thandi Mpambo-Sibhukwana, a human rights champion strongly endorsed by the Premier of the Western Cape was the key figure of the social dialogue session at all the tournaments. In Gansbaai she led a motivational and challenging interactive dialogue delivering the powerful message: MY RIGHT, MY RESPONSIBILITY, MY FUTURE .

Eight teams from across the Overstrand participated in the Gansbaai DreamEvent (schools from Hawston, Zwelihle, Stanford and Gansbaai) vying for the top spot.  Each school received a DreamBag with a full set of kit (in the school’s colours) and boots. The tournament competition was tough and after a nail biting penalty shoot-out the team from Stanford were announced tournament winners and went through to the Western Cape finals in Cape Town on the 28th of May.

Well done to Dreamfields and PGWC for this amazing initiative and thanks to Lifezone Soccer for organizing this excellent event.

I think that Gansbaai is very lucky to have awesome sports facilities and wireless!!! But more so, to have cool people who makes these things possible and sustainable. All over the country I see how people's jealousy or attitude stops development, so to see things working well is an encouragement. I'm sure there is problems everywhere, but going ahead and not allowing difficulties to stop us, is key to building a new Mzansi.
