Grootbos Foundation launches new Athletics project

10 January 2012

The Grootbos Foundation launched a new athletics project on the 9th of January at the Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre: UMNTANA PHAMBILI. The project is aimed at giving children from marginalized communities the opportunity to participate in organized athletics training programmes, to learn about the environment, and to get access to training opportunities in tourism and guiding.

The new project was made possible by Airtours and Grootbos, with the support of the German Federal Government.

The project was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, Mr. Gert C. Oosthuizen, Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, German Ambassador Horst Freitag, Mrs Ulla Schmidt MP (Germany), Mrs Dagmar Freitag MP (Germany) and German General Consul Hans-Werner Bussmann. Also present were sporting celebrities Olympic athlete and silver medallist Elana Meyer and former Springbok player Ashwin Willemse.

Deputy Minister Gert Oosthuizen, Sport and Recreation South Africa said: “Today, I wished that we can have in every community, a multi-purpose facility in sport, just like the one in Gansbaai; with programmes like the one of Grootbos Foundation that I officially opened today.”

Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, said: “I am a great supporter of the sport, or the art of Athletics. The future of our country will be determined with what we put into the development of our children. Today’s launch is to create an opportunity for our young people to get involved in athletics, to meet at club level and develop into great athletes.”

Francois Myburgh, Area Manager for the Overstrand Municipality said: “I am so proud to be part of and to witness another valuable contribution in investing in the future of our wonderful town and country. I am pretty sure that we will soon experience the positive results and dividends on the investment made here today.”

Geoff Rothschild, Director: Government & International Affairs for the JSE, and Football Foundation Vice Chairman, said: “What a privilege to be invited and be present at the launch of athletics here in Gansbaai. The fact that the German Federal Government have bought into the project is fantastic. It is a great tribute to the daily input of Project Manager Leán Terblanche, and Grootbos Foundation Director Michael Lutzeyer. Athletics will give a new dimension to the Foundation’s existing sport for development programmes.”

Springbok Ashwin Willemse said: “You can only be as good as the opportunities that come your way. This project offers children the opportunity to excel in life.”

German Ambassador Horst Freitag encouraged everyone to look into the future: “This project may seem like a small step today – but it is a huge step in building a strong and vibrant community.”

MP Ulla Schmidt, Former German Minister of Health, said: “I am deeply surprised by what you are doing here. It’s a great project to build up a future for the children, to get them educated, to spread hope and support democracy.”

German Consul General in Cape Town, Hans-Werner Bussmann, said: “Grootbos Foundation and the Football Foundation deserve to be commended for the extraordinary work they do to encourage young people to take responsibility of their own lives by giving them the chance to experience success.”

On the 04th of December 2011, Fillipe, Hardlife (both Manica Site), Schalk and Doc both went to visit the GB youthzones site where they all met with othr caches from around the world of Braclays for Sport. We witnessed all the great work done by the crew there and the graduation of local youth under the ETA programme. At the end of the day we had we had a small match.

THANK YOU!

The Football Foundation of South Africa was honoured for their sports development programme in Gansbaai by the World Leisure Organization. The Foundation received the 2011 World Leisure International Innovation Prize Highly Commended.

... The 2011 WLO Prize was presented to Football Foundation representative Leán Terblanche on 17 November in Hangzhou, China. The awards ceremony took place at the International Leisure Forum held during The World Leisure EXPO 2011.

The 2011 World Leisure International Innovation (WLO) Prize is awarded to innovative leisure projects which demonstrate a strong contribution to citizens well-being .

The major component that differentiates the Innovation Prize from many other awards is that it focuses on the social and cultural aspects of leisure as an aspect of the lived experience for individuals in a community and for visitors to the community. This Prize represents the use of leisure as a creative solution to enhancing collectively the social, cultural, environmental, and economic quality of life in an area. The WLO Prize seeks to recognize organizations that have implemented creative solutions that foster local, national, or international leisure opportunities for the benefit and development of individuals and communities. Leisure is considered in its broadest sense including play, recreation, the arts and culture, sports, festivals and celebrations, health and fitness, or travel and tourism. It encompasses indoor or outdoor programs, services, and amenities.

The Football Foundation would like to thank the Hangzhou Municipal Peoples Government for inviting and covering the costs of a Foundation representative to attend the Forum and Awards Ceremony. They would also like to thank Kamilla Swart and her team from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology for their support in making this award possible.

Launch of Breaking Barriers Gansbaai

In May this year, Barclays launched an 18-month intervention in partnership with Active Communities Network that will see 60 youngsters getting an opportunity to achieve an accredited Coaching Science qualification, opening doors for employment opportunities to youth from the Overstrand. The Football Foundation is the local implementing partner for this project, with the support of the Overstrand Municipality.

The course, presented and accredited by eta and Changebox Training Management, offers a comprehensive development programme to up-skill participants in the following areas:

  • Sport for community development and social change
  • Coaching and instructor development
  • Business management and development

These skills would be applicable in building the capacity of the local community to work in the Gansbaai area, and for further education and employment pathways available to course participants. This project also includes a two year action research programme to evidence the impact of the project on the community and participants.

The course kicked off with a Sport for Community Development and Social Change module presented by Rubel Ahmed from 16 – 20 May 2011. This gripping course was a brilliant induction to the 6 month programme and a catalyst for cohesion within the diverse student group. John Masilo from eta started with his course material on the 27th of May and the students have been on their toes ever since! The first cohort is set to graduate in November 2011.
