People queeing for knowledge in Siyabuswa

I am (01/11/2010) here in Siyabuswa for three days already. I have never been so touch deeply by the interest and hunger of the people in the community for technology and to better their lives not to say they are bad or worst rather grow to what they want in their respective lives. This morning, in a space of about 2 hours, almost 30 unemployed youth, young boys and girls, mothers queeing to learn computer, some applying for university some applying for jobs. All of them queeing for one laptop. We had to use my work and personal laptop. Just seeing these guys , just made me wonder about lifestyles in Jozi where I am residing at the moment. Just one laptop making a difference in a big community of about 200 000 people. They even ran out of ink in their printer which was donated by someone in the community who saw the good work done by the youth here. Community is standing together even to build a site where they want to make a development centre ( with a soccer field, netball field, comp centre and a small hall) and invest in their community. They even enrich each other by becoming a family, sharing, helping each other. They are also making a movie which is all about the issues experienced in their community. The good news goes on and on. The question I always ask myself? Am I appreciative to the small things I have? Especially after this encounter.

I had a wonderful weekend in Siyabuswa, staying with Bushy. She is a very special lady, and I was humbled by her selfless service to the community. And I was stuck by the very same thougth Doc, am I appreciating what I have? Seeing how people make the best with what they have, even if this is not much, vs where I come from - exptremely privaledged, with access to almost anything. I feel quite guilty about my very comfortable lifestyle.
Bushy saved her money to buy a bed, so that visitors to the site can have a place to stay - how often do I deliberately put myself in an uncomfortable position/situation for the good of others? am I prepared to deliberately move out of my comfort zone, so that others can benefit from my comfort. What a blessing this short visit have been. Are there some of my privaledged friends out there who wants to join me in exploring more of these sites, of challenging yourself? You have no idea what the effect of this action will be on your own heart.
