UNISA, new friend of the poor of the poorest in Kameeldrift

The Unisa event that took place last week on Friday the 7th in Kameeldrift was awesome. It was humbling to witness a whole group of Professors led by the Dean of the College of Law, sacrificing their congested schedules just to mix and mingle with the youths in a modest place like DK.To most of the youths, it was a lifetime event, we had never anticipated it.

The first highlight of the event was when we sat down together in Sdala's shack and they listened attentively to testimonials from the youths, on the impact of the work being done by Youthzones. It was awe-inspiring for the host and the youths from the site. Over 200 Unisa caps were distributed to people present and this gesture, small as it might seem, meant a lot to the community. The speech from the humble Dean was also uplifting as she pledged to support further what Youthzones is doing. Afterwards, the life-skill activity that was led by Doc also taught us that we can achieve more by working together instead of competing.

The match pitting the youths versus Unisa staff was so exciting and action packed as the youths led by Schalk and Doc were in rampant mood. Despite pumping 4 goals past Unisa, it didn't erase the friendly atmosphere. After the match, the teams came together and made a big circle to reflect lessons learnt from the match. Unisa Captain Thabiso appreciated the talent he saw in the field and also encouraged the youths to pursue academic studies.

When the time to disperse came, you could feel the renewed sense of hope and excitement that stayed behind this despised place.
