Using Youth Day to Remember

"June 16 is a day with bitter memories, but we have to remember and remember to look forward" said Doc Mabila during an event in Intabazwe, Harrismith.

In the picture above, we see how the 'ngamulas' got involved in youth day: some donating wors, others chips and bread, some cold drinks, some fire wood and others meat. We think this assistance shows…

Interview: 10 Questions for Roelf Meyer

With Mr Roelf Meyer, founder of FSSA and Youthzones currently visiting Upington, and in particular Pabalello, www.youthzones.co.za took the chance to ask him 10 interesting questions:

YZ: Why did you start the Foundation for a Safe South Africa?

RM: I spent a long time wondering how I could contribute as a member of civil society, towards making a safe and stable South Africa, then I realised it’s not up to the…

Life-Skills Competition Results

One does not need a curriculum to learn life-skills. Every incident or situation can become a class-room.

That is whyYouthzones launched the life-skills competition only on the www.youthzones.co.za website, to teach participants that if you spend time on constructive things, you put yourself into a situation to benefit. Like they say: you have to create your own luck.

The adjudication was done by an independent third party in…

We play, we learn, we get kicked

Football can be a great educational tool, to teach us life-skills and help us grow up. But it can also be a place where we learn to behave stupid! Some football teams is just an excuse to fight, drink and get girls- some even do crime together!

Luckily, with all the teams we work with as part of youthzones, football is a tool for education and growing. So what makes the difference, what makes football to sometimes be good and sometimes be bad? I think it has everything to do…

EQ

This morning in Diepkloof Soweto, we had fun: playing football and chatting. The local guys were there as well as some visitors from the UK (Andy and his boys). Firstly, the British boys were not bad at football and I think they were nice. We quickly gave them nick names: Walcott, Eboue, Malankane/Yaya, Crouch, etc. They were cool. Not the rioting type, it seems :-) The experience overall was good.

Yet there were a few reality checks, that convinced me again poverty is not about money…

Equal Opportunities?

Everybody do their few minutes on Mandela Day which like lead SA might be cute, or is it just a way for things to stay as they are with some legitimation added to the story? The Madiba everyone celebrates asked for an ideal where "all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities". We like the idea of harmony and no crime, but what are we doing about 'equal opportunities'? I watched Carte Blanche about poor black youths attacking whites who do mountain biking. Now, I NEVER… Continue

Voting 18 May

I just voted. Luckily the queues were not too long and it went quick, but I was willing to stand there for 3 or 4 hours.

Our country is a democracy and the most powerful thing we have is the ability for each citizen to make a cross. That is the foundation of everything. If a person does not vote they have no right to complain or to demand.

So, I want to provoke and say there are two groups of South Africans: those citizens who vote and are part of the process and those who do…

Mindset partners with Youthzones

On 12 May at Oasis in Cosmo City a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mindset and Youthzones.

The purpose is to work together in providing academic support to high school learners. Mindset already contributes with a flatscreen TV, satelite dish and DVD's for all youthzones!

We are looking forward to a great relationship over the coming years, benefiting the youths at all our sites, and thus benefiting the development of our country.…

Arsenal Gap Year

Two Arsenal Gap Year community coaches were in Manica, Mozambique for four months volunteering. Adam Tarant and Drew Tyler spent their time coaching youth football, English, Life-Skills and Computer Literacy.

"Volunteering here was life-changing experience for me, I will definitely be back" said Adam.

After manica, they also visited and did coaching at Nkomazi with coach Zero and the Academy in Kamaqekeza. "Fantastic work, the kids are so teachable and play at a higher…

Feedback from Teramai after Manica Mutare Exchange

Hi bro

The exchange game with our friends from Manica (GDM) went on very, very well. It was so refreshing to meet with all those friends, the likes of Nelson, Waru Waru and that music guy!! It was also good to see the re-union of Bruce, Pingi and myself as we took time to remind each other of our unforgettable 2010 World Cup experiences!!! We also laughed it out as we remembered Waru Waru's "World Cup" experience at the RSA border!! We cried…

Khulisa Training

Wow, what a fantastic week. 15 participants from Youthzones all over the country came to Pretoria and participated in a week of training and fun! Thabo, our 'master' trainer was fantastic in both content and personality. For me it was great to make friends and learn from everyone. We are all different and we are all the same.

The fact that we had 15 female participants was a highlight. Thabo said if people say 'I miss you' or 'when are you coming again?' you know that you…

Attending a World Cup Game

Here is a letter from Teramai:

Hi Schalk

We had a very safe journey back home. Thanks for everything. We arrived today at around 11am in the morning. Below are my reflections for the match;

It was a life changing and very unique experience for me. Never had I attended a match of such high magnitude. Let alone, getting the opportunity to watch several of my football heroes who showcase their talents in some of the…

why you should care about a stolen chicken in Qwa Qwa

My day to day job puts me in many new and exciting situations. It expands the scope of my emotions in that I have more and higher 'highs' and I also have more and lower 'lows'. Sometimes I little thing can eat away at me for days, like Veli's comment that although he likes to eat eggs, he cannot keep chickens, because they will obviously get stolen.
Now I trust Veli that this assumption is probably accurate and indeed buying chickens might be a waste of money, unless you have the intention…

Life Skills in Zimbabwe

This past week was one of those when I was proud of myself, my colleagues and our supporters. Why am I proud? Because we stuck to our guns (as a manner of speech) in including our neighbouring countries in the Youth Zone Legacy Network Program. Through the Manican participants, Mutare Utd was incorporated into the program and the twinning relationship growing on either side of the border seems to be turning into something special.

The Life-skills conducted in Zimbabwe this week was a… Continue

give it up

yesterday while standing in bumper to bumper traffic in the rain, five men opened my car door and and asked for my telehphone, with the added persuasiveness that they would shoot me if I didn't hand it over. As I reached for my phone, they saw my laptop uncovered and asked for that also, under the same conditions of compliance. Lastly was the brainwave that I should have a wallet, so in the end they ran of and kept my iphone, macbook and wallet. I kept my car and my…

Joint Training Event in Jozi

Wow! The agenda was a 2 day Peter Block Seminar where leaders from the youth zones were to be trained in community building, facilitation and teamwork.

The outcome was 3 days of bliss where 14 strangers became close friends. Representatives from Upington, Umzimkhulu, Mutare, Manica and Siyabuswa added life and wisdom to the seminar.

I trust that all the participants will write about their experiences on the pages of their respective sites, but as the team reflected on what they… Continue
