From the 11-15th of November, Simon, Schalk and Doc were working in Umlazi section H. The trip went well were the YZ team worked well with the juniors, U/15 and senior team of Juventus FC where the life skills, computer literacy and football training sessions were conducted in an uneven rocky field where the whole crew trains. We also gave the team four Mikasa soccer balls and three life skills menu, Schalk also gave away his personal soccer boots to the team. We also attended games of all the divisions on Saturday where the Doc was coaching and Schalk and Simon also ran life skills session with the first team.

Simon and Doc travelled to Umlazi on Saturday, the 4th of Feb 2012. And we had  a safe trip and we around 11pm. On Sunday straight to work, we held a training session with the U/15 Juventus FC in the new Chesa field around 10am in H-Section and then we went to play a match for the seniors in Madamine Soccer Ground in J-Section where Juventus lost 4-3 and there is a lot of work to be done in terms of coaching and the lads are not that bad. And we made many friends in the field and it was incredible. We trhen went to check the house where we are going to install the Telkom ADSL for internet connection and it was great and the gogo is caring about the youth and it was my first to see her, all along we just spoke over the phone. You can imagine the excitement. We then held computer literacy session with the lads before calling it a day in the evening. Today, on Monday, we are taking the ABI friends to Umlazi. Sipho and Nosihle and probably Tumi might join us. And definitely the main thing is to get the speed test for internet connection from all the available networks in different spots where we hang out

    1. 1.    Introduction and update:

Not only to realize that Umlazi is got the same population size as Soweto and interestingly is got few different ethnic groups including Xhosa and Zulu. Doc has visited the area three times, first with Masi, and then Schalk and Simon. The need in terms of resources and skills development is bit extreme.

    Relationship and identified leaders

We develop a solid relationship with Mondli Cele, Sanele, Ayanda Batha, Nothi and Mzi of Juventus FC in H-Section and Wendy Mdletshe of Umlazi Netball Team, Japhet Zwane, former Bafana Bafana Player.

    Football

Juventus FC consists of under 13, 17, 19 divisions which trains in Ntselele Primary School at H section and play most of their games at Madamine at J-Ssction and then first team which normal trains at Valley Field by the boundary between G and H section. The latter field at the moment  needs bulldozer to renovate and we are busy organise that.

Doc has conducted 20 training sessions on basic technique and recently we worked on tactics. The team received electron copy of success in soccer coaching manual, 6 balls, 6 pairs of Argentina soccer boots, 20 cones, 2 fox whistles, 1 stop watch, tactical coaching board, and we are waiting for their two set of kit to be numbered and put their team emblem and then should be delivered shortly.

On Sunday, we held a tournament at Madamine where the following teams where involvedYoung Chiefs FC, Real Darkies FC, Real Magic, One FC and all Stars and unfortunately Juvetus were knocked out at first round. This tournament was to build more friendship.

    Computer Skills and Connectivity

This is the field where the lads are still lacking much but Ayanda Batha, first team player is very good in it and volunteered to continue teaching the lads where I left. And Mzi “Mbazo”  is a computer technician and he is very good  with fixing the computer.

Doc held ten sessions on computer Literacy with Juventus FC players and two intense session with Wendy. Sanele received a C5 3G Nokia with 1 GB loaded sim on behalf of the team and he will be responsible for sending emails, photos on the website and communicating and updating. The team also received an acer laptop. This is to experiment and of course they are very active and learning quickly, I should bring machine quickly. The netball team received acer laptop.

We are also planning to install telkom ADSL at Lunga s house at house number H508 as I am busy testing the speed connectivity of all networks in different spots where the teams plays.

Wendy getting the vibe and continuing exploring more

    Life skills

Violence, conflicts, theft, lack of confidence and uncontrolled emotional response is the most common life behavioural issues among the youths. Doc held 15 life skills session on emotional response, respect, team work, problem solving, confidence and honesty (refer to life skills menu for more details). Mostly the sessions are done in the middle of training by simply stopping the training if the issue arises.

One of my highlight after we worked on confidence and responsibility, I saw the young lads collecting the debris at the field by the school.

    Organic Project

At the moment we are working with Wendy who is running and coaching her own netball team and it is inspiring to see a young leader like her. Her team trains at Victoria Mxenge community hall at D section. Her team consists of boys and girls. They traing every Tuesday and Thursday. She recently received 10 cones, fox whistle, stop watch, laptop and life skills menu from us.

    Future relationships

We are also trying to see how can we work with Bra Phumulani Japhet Zwane, Netball team at BB section and Khumbuza Express FC at Teyesi. Doc has just started making friendship with them.

    Juventus Field

The main thing at the moment is to enlarge the soccer field of Juventus FC first team which has been choked by the forest due to rain.

    Highlights :

    Chesa Field

The donated chesa field is in full use by Juventus Juniors and Senior in different section. The field is located at H-Section, Umlazi inside Nselele Primary School for secur4ity reasons.

Boys training at the Chesa field

    Sipho ‘s site vist

Definitely one of the highlights during my visit this time is when we had not only a visit by Sipho from ABI but also the way he mingled and played soccer for first time with the young lads. I learnt as lot from him always happy, eager to learn, supportive and humble.

I had such a wonderful experience, and i do agree when they say unity is power(kopano ke matla).Being part of youthzone is indeed wonderful ive learned so many things. one of my greatest experiences with the youthzone members is being to Durban. We went to Umlazi (location) and i was indeed honored to spent a day filled with love and respect with other people.

Sharing this experiences with the youthzone members, how can i forget Mr Doc Mabila the one who organized the whole thing. He is so passionate about he does, he loves people and also helping the needy. At Umlazi i could see the  joy and love he had for those children. i was very inspired to see the kit for netball and soccer.

This taught me that we as young people we must stand up and help one another, and everything we do, we must do it with all our heart.

From the 24th of March till till the  30th of March, I took a trip down to Natal with three youths from Evaton North and former GDM volunteer in Manica. The youth were Nkele Sekgarume and Ayanda Booi both Computer Literacy Teachers at Qedelizwe High School, Tseko, the captain of Evaton North Arsenal FC and Joe former volunteer of Manica GDM. The trip went well and the lads were great. We arrived in Natal on the 24th where everyone was tired and went to to our different places of accommodation. On the 25th of March, we went to work in Umlazi with the youth, playing soccer, the youth from Evaton North interacting with the youth of Umlazi. Which was beautiful to witness. Exchanging numbers, inviting each other on Facebook, planning to visit each other. On the 26th we also went to Umlazi where we continued working with the guys on computers, their new toy the cellphone, updating their emails, hanging out together, meeting the big boys their first team. To a shock of my life and inspirational, the lads already made their own videos celebrating and editing it using the cellphone. I was impressed. We then also worked in the afternoon offloading grass from the truck which was going to be planted in their new look soccer field. It was beautiful. On Tuesday, the 27 we spent much time going around branding their new kit and offloading more grass and putting in the right place. you could see the lads doing it with broad smiles excited about their new field. We then spend time with the netball team and basketball team  in D Section at Victoria Mxenge the whole of the afternoon. Playing netball and basketball with them. And joining the boxing lads also. We made lot of friends. After I got everyone and explain how we operate and we going to operate together as friends. On the 28th it was the D-Day CSI day which went extremely well and above a lll big thank you to Nosihle and Sipho and the rest of the ABI staff. Grass was planted all over the field and new friends were made all the participants from soccer U/11 to seniors, basketball, soccer ladies, netball were there. it was beautiful atmosphere.  There are six orphans in the team who also got food parcels which will last for a month and there will be follow up or rather continuation of feeding them and the kids who didn't have school shoes are getting school shoes. Everything is looking great in Umlazi. The next day I spent most of the time fixing the car. and Friday, I drove all the way to Jozi and arrived safely.
